Wikipedia Entity Eligibility Checklist

15 items to assess whether your brand qualifies for a Wikipedia article — and how to draft one if it does.

The full checklist

  1. Verify your brand has been mentioned in at least 3 independent reliable sources
Wikipedia's notability standard requires significant coverage in independent reliable sources (news, books, journals).
  2. Confirm those sources are not press releases or company-authored content
Wikipedia rejects sources where the company influenced the coverage.
  3. Check WP:NCORP (Notability — corporations) and WP:NWEB carefully
Wikipedia's notability bar for companies is high; read the actual policy.
  4. Identify 5-10 independent reliable sources for your draft
Each major claim needs a source. Without sources, the article gets deleted.
  5. Write the draft in neutral encyclopedic tone (no marketing language)
Wikipedia rejects promotional language — it must read like encyclopedia content.
  6. Disclose any conflict of interest (if you work for the company)
WP:COI rules require disclosure. Failing to disclose risks article deletion plus account ban.
  7. Use the Articles for Creation process (don't publish directly to mainspace)
AfC gives you a reviewer's feedback before the article goes live, dramatically improving acceptance rate.
  8. Include a clear infobox (Infobox company)
Standard format helps reviewers and signals encyclopedic format.
  9. Include sections: History, Products, Reception, Funding, References
    Standard structure for company articles.
  10. Cite every factual claim with inline references
Wikipedia content without inline citations gets deleted.
  11. Add the brand to Wikidata (much easier than Wikipedia)
Wikidata accepts notable entities at a much lower bar; even small companies often qualify.
  12. Add sameAs links from Wikidata to your social profiles
Strengthens entity-graph connections that AI engines use.
  13. Don't pay editors — paid editing is increasingly detected and penalized
Use legitimate Articles for Creation; pay-to-publish services routinely lead to bans.
  14. If rejected, study the reviewer's notes carefully and improve sources
First rejection is normal; substantive sources fix most issues.
  15. Once accepted, monitor the article for vandalism and update annually
Wikipedia articles need maintenance; abandoned articles drift toward inaccuracy.
